Boston was the first of American city to embrace the Arts and Crafts movement before it swept the entire country, and in 1897, the Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston became the first in the nation to rally around the ideals first advanced by John Ruskin. Artists in the region were celebrated for their work in metalwork, jewelry, and ceramics.
